What is an architecture decision record?
An architecture decision record (ADR), sometimes called an architectural decision record, is a short document that captures one significant decision: the context, the decision, and its consequences. Teams keep them so that people joining later can see why things are the way they are.
Where are my decision records kept, and who can see them?
Free sessions are temporary, so download the record as PDF or Markdown before you leave. Decided Pro keeps every decision in your organization's searchable decision log, stored in Microsoft Azure in the United Kingdom. People sign in with your organization's Microsoft Entra ID account, and each organization's data is kept separate. Shared decisions are visible to everyone in your organization who uses Decided Pro; private decisions are visible only to the person who ran the decision. Our security and data protection documents are available on request.
Is our data used to train AI?
No. Decided uses Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service, which doesn't use your prompts or outputs to train models. The AI only drafts suggestions, and nothing is added to a record until someone accepts it.
What happens to our decisions if we cancel?
Your decision log is kept for 12 months after you cancel, so if you resubscribe you pick up where you left off.
What formats can I export?
PDF and Markdown in the free version. Decided Pro adds Word.
Will it fit our existing ADR repository?
Yes. The Markdown export uses the familiar Context, Decision, Consequences layout with a numbered file name, so you can commit it straight into an existing ADR folder.
Does everyone need Microsoft Teams?
No. Participants join from a link and rank in their browser, with no account or install. You can also run a free session in your browser at decisionrecords.app. Decided Pro runs in Microsoft Teams.
What does the AI do?
Decided uses Azure OpenAI to suggest options, requirements and a title, and to draft the rationale and consequences. Suggestions are clearly marked, and nothing is added to the record until you accept it. The decision itself is always made by people.
